If you are going to : be sexually active - recommend that you use protection every time. Although this would be extremely unlikely to become pregnant at that time- it is best to get in the habit of using protection. Menses will not protect against transmission of sexually transmitted diseases.

Yes: You can not conceive by having sex on the first day of your period, but if you are not using effective contraception then you are still taking unnecessary chances. See your doctor for birth control or use one of the OTC methods available.
