How to clean child's ear without hurting him?

Ear cleaning: Never put anything smaller than your elbow in the ear, an old wives tale that is true even today. Only clean the outer ear with soap and water and a wash cloth. Do not clean with a q-tip in the ear canal. This can hurt and usually just pushes the wax back.
