No certainty: there is no way to be certain what is implantation bleeding and what is menstrual period.

Timing: First there really is no such thing as implantation bleeding. There may be a spot or two but not bleeding when the fetus lands on the wall of the uterus. Menstruation happens once per cycle and on time in most cases. Implantation would happen a few days after conception, so much earlier in the cycle than menstruation.
