Fairly: The diaphragm, itself, can be injured without deadly consequences. However, since it is located literally in the center of the body, (immediately next to the liver, spleen, stomach, aorta, vena cava, lungs and the heart), it is hard to injure the diaphragm without injuring one or more of these critical structures. If the diaphragm, itself, is not repaired a serious hernia through it can result.
