Can you tell if you have an umbilical hernia?

Examination: A physical examination by your doctor is usually sufficient. There may be a swelling or soft bulge located near the umbilicus, and would protrude more if you do straining or heavy lifting.

Yes: Usually yes. You see a bulge in the area. Or what people call an outie. www.drlugo.com.

See a doctor: Your primary doctor or a general surgeon will be able to tell if you have an umbilical hernia. If you have a bulge at your belly button that gets larger when you strain your abdominal muscles or lift something heavy, then you likely have an umbilical hernia. If so, see a surgeon about fixing the hernia.
