Immediately : Herpes spreads immediately on direct contact. However, symptoms can be delayed to develop for 3-7 days.

2 to 7 days: Depends. Contact with mouth or genital? The virus may colonize mucous membranes or damaged skin. Infection may be apparent in a few days. Acyclovir or valacyclovir pills are very effective treatment. Most people already have type 1 herpes, many have type 2 already, so they are not effected. You cannot be worried all the time. If you really like the other person, you take a chance.
