IV medications: If the high blood pressure is extremely high called accelerated hypertension or hypertensive emergency, the fastest ways to reduce blood pressure is through IV medications including Nitroglycerin or fenoldopam. With meds or not?: Without meds, your hands are tied: all you can do is rest quietly and avoid salt. However, there are many medicines available to your doctor that will efficiently lower bp. Be advised: it is more dangerous to lower BP too quickly than to have high BP in the first place. During hypertensive emergencies, BP is lowered under ICU monitoring to levels that are still high, but safe.
