It depends...: The conventional wisdom is for a patient with a first depressive episode, treatment should last for 6-9 months once remission is achieved because it reduces the risk of recurrence. However, if a patient has significant ongoing or anticipated stress (move, job change, etc.) or has a history of multiple depressive episodes, a physician may recommend the patient remain on medication for longer.
