Formula/breast first: It is not necessary to offer water to an 8 month old infant. If more fluids are desired, it is best to give formula or nurse the baby. If she is consistently taking over 32-40 ounces of these daily, then water can be offered to avoid overfeeding and excessive calories. Soft foods , such as mashed banana, cooked squash, soft fruits and many of the infant "puffs" that dissolve in the mouth are ok.

Neurotypical tots: who are healthy eat & drink what they need. Respect her hunger & thirst cues. Breast milk alone is fine till age 1. Offer water in a small open-mouth plastic cup from which you have cut a semicircle so that her nose is not in the cup. Offer finger foods that dissolve, puréed meats or single-ingredient baby food meats with iron before you give sweet veggies or fruits. Juice is not needed.
