A member asked:

Which drugs other than phenytoin and carbamazepine cause fetal hydantoin syndrome?

Epilepsy meds: Fetal hydantoin syndrome is specific to hydantoin. However, all of the drugs used for seizure control are associated with a small increase in birth defects. Valproate is the only one that needs to be avoided in pregnancy. Not taking any medication, and having seizures, can be much worse for the fetus. Most babies whose mothers need and take these meds do not have birth defects.

Birth defects: This syndrone is specific to those drugs. That is, although you can find the individual defects in other conditions with different causes, when they are found in a baby from a mother that has taken phenytion, they are called fetal hydantoin syndrome.
