Are external hemorrhoids always painful? i have what seems like a pea-sized red bump next to anus but not painful at all, but bleeds sometime.

Rarely painful: Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins (interconnecting between the lower colon ; skin) both above ; below and adjacent to the anal opening. Like any other vein, they rarely painful, unless infected or clots within.

Hemorrhoids: External hemorrhoids are usually only painful if clot forms. Any lump that bleeds should be evaluated by your doctor.
