A member asked:

If a child has low g6pd at birth, when should the next g6pd test be done? how much does the g6pd change over the first year?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

G6PD DEFICIENCY: This is the most common RBC enzyme defect that causes hemolytic anemia. It occurs only upon exposure to certain drugs or food. Suspect it when symtoms appear like hyperbilirubinemia, increase in reticulocyte ct, low hemoglobin, of african, mediterranean or Asian descent and exposure to offending food or drugs, g6pd will be low. Hemolytic anemia is episodic not chronic.
