A member asked:

How can benadryl (diphenhydramine) and xanax differ when it comes to treating anxiety?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Very different med: Xanax and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are two very different medications. Xanax is an anti anxiety medication approved for the treatment of anxiety. It is in the benzodiazepine class of medication so there is a risk of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms that lead to dependence. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an anti histamine approved for the treatment of allergy symptoms. It primarily produces drowsiness which can cover anxiety.
