Diagnosing allergy: Diagnosing allergy is based on both symptoms and confirmed by allergy testing. Each alone is not suffice for a diagnosis. For cat allergy, it means that you have allergy symptoms each time you pet the cat or when the cat is nearby. If allergy testing showing sensitivity to the cat, you have a diagnosis of cat allergy. Get tested. : Animal allergy may not be obvious, especially with regular exposure. Can cause congestion, increase frequency of respiratory infections. Skin tests and blood tests are available, but have limitations. Skin tests are generally more sensitive than blood tests, but even skin tests can miss patients shown allergic when exposed to cats in the lab. Have an allergist interpret.
