A member asked:

What treatments are there for a child who has a habit of eating non-food items?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pica: This behavior is called pica. There is a relationsip with iron deficiency in some children and this should be treated if present. In younger children, close supervision/prevetion is primary approach. If mental retardation and other psychiatric disease is excludable in an older child, i would recommend cognitive behavioral therapy with an expert in this area.
