Anatomy: In general, the proximity of the urethra to the perineum where bacteria flourish is the main reason. Sexual activity can often push bacteria from this region into the urethra. Since the urethra is quite short in females, the trip into the bladder is easily made especially with mechanical assistance with intercourse.
