A member asked:

Does a child with alopecia have any hopeful treatments?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Extent?: Localized areata will respond to topical or cortisone shots. More extensive hairless is difficult to treat and the risks of oral cortisone is not justified. Child should also be tested for thyroid abtibodoes that can be seen in patients with alopecia areata. There are reports of success with simvistatin, a cholesterol lowering drug in reforming hair in extensive alopecia areata.
