DGL licorice: Please do what your doc says, but a natural approach is to take dgl. Dgl is licorice tablets with an enzyme remove (because too much of it can raise bp). You need to take a lot of it but many find it helpful. I know it's difficult, but please try to stop smoking also. You will be glad you did. Peace and good health.
