It's a preservative: Thiomerasol is ethyl mercury, which is rapidly excreted from the body. It is not methyl mercury which can cause problems if introduced into the body.

Preservation: It takes time for a biologically sensitive product like vaccines to be produced, bottled, shipped and kept on hand with enough shelf life that it doesn't weaken before use. Preservatives like thimerosal, a non-toxic mercury derivative to help that happen.
