What can be done to raise hemoglobin when anemic?

FInd the cause: Treat the person, not the lab value. There are over 100 different causes of anemia, and each needs to be managed differently. If your physician has not explained the cause and best treatment, insist that he/she do this for you. If the workup is ongoing, ask that it be explained.

Depends on the cause: For iron deficiency - try otc ferrous sulfate. Foods high in iron are also useful as is "blackstrap molasses". Vit c can also help you absorb nutrients. Lack of vit B12 and folate (folic acid) can also cause anemia and meds are available. Anemia can be congenital (like sickle cell and thalessemia) which don't respond as well to diet. Of course transfusion ; bone marrow stimulation/transplant in severe cases.
