Overweight: Being overweight can cause shortness of breath with exertion. More calories are required for basic metabolic functions. In addition, the weight constricts the rib cage with breathing. If the symptoms of shortness of breath persists, then an evaluation by a physician is necessary. They may perform spirometry testing and a chest xray.
