Syneresis: is the name of the process of breakdown of the jelly in the eye. This occurs as the eye ages. As it does, pockets of liquid form within the jelly. The formerly invisible jelly now becomes visible. This makes the floaters you see. Uncommonly, floaters are caused by an infection or bleeding in the eye. People with new floaters should get a prompt eye exam.
