Mental perseveration: sounds like an old fashioned term for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Please see your doc to rule out any organic brain disorder and then a mental health professional to treat your possible OCD. One modern treatment is called "Exposure therapy" and it's gentler than it sounds. Peace and good health.
