Most common: Hi. Hashimoto's thyroititis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. It is an autoimmune disease where the patient's own immune system attacks his/her thyroid. Most patients with Hashimoto's do not have a goiter, although a sizable minority do. Once hypothyroid, Hashimoto's patients will require thyroid hormone replacement for life. Treated properly, it should have no influence on longevity.
