Symptoms of HPT: I won’t repeat the excellent answers you have already received. I would add gastroesophageal reflux, long bone pain,(especially the shins) and hypertension (which really isn’t a symptom but a co morbidity which is exacerbated by HPT. I have gotten a few patients off of their blood pressure meds!)

Usually asymptomatic: Most cases of hyperparathyroidism are typically asymptomatic, as we find a high calcium on lab-work obtained for other reasons and then work it up. But excessive thirst and excessive urination are some of the earliest symptoms. Later patients can have vague abdominal complaints, kidney stones, and generalized fatigue. We also monitor them for osteoporosis, but his is asymptomatic.

Bone Pain: Hyperparathyroidism occur because of enlargement of your parathyroid gland. This enlargement leads to overactivity of the PTH hormone. This hormone can cause poor calcium absorption thus leading to a weakened bone structure. With poor bone formation, you can develop bone pain but more importantly fractures. With weakend bones, you can easily break your bones on a simple fall.

Hyperparathyroid: Hyperparathyroidism is a situation when your blood calcium is higher than normal because of excess production of parathyroid hormone. The higher the parathyroid hormone and serum calcium the more symptoms you will including neurologic symptoms. Almost always the treatment of choice is removal of the parathyroid gland. There may as few as one abnormal gland or as many as all four glands.
