Oral hygiene: Bad breath is caused by a build up of bacteria in areas that are not being cleaned. These areas can be periodontal pockets, which are the spaces between the tooth and the gums. If these spaces get deep enough where you cannot clean, they become diseased and the large amount of bacteria produce a foul odor as a by product. Bacteria can also accumulate on the back of the tongue and cavities. Floss.
