A 34-year-old member asked:

How long does it take gallstones to develop?

Dr. Allen Seely
General Practice 31 years experience
Months to years: There are 2 types of gallstones: 'cholesterol stones' (caused by excess cholesterol in bile from high fat diet, etc..) and 'pigment stones' (caused by excess bilirubin in bile due to liver disease). A patient who has gallbladder 'dysfunction' (doesn't empty) will concentrate bile causing stones. Pregnancy , rapid weight loss diabetes or liver disease may accelerate the process.

How long does it take for gallstones to start forming?

Dr. Peter Denk
General Surgery 20 years experience
Months to years: Gallstones form usually over years and aren't found until they cause pain or blockage of the cystic duct or common bile duct. However with fast and dramatic weight loss, such as after weight loss surgery, gallstone formation may be increased and cause them in just a few months time.
A 45-year-old member asked:

Is it possible for kapalbhati to cure gallstones? How long would it take?

Dr. Steve Howe
Thoracic Surgery 29 years experience
Probably not: Dissolving gallstones has never been successful. They are pretty much there until they are taken out . Not all gallstones need to come out. Only if they cause problems. In fact most people with gallstones don't have any problem with them . When they cause issues it is usually as upper abdominal pain experienced AFTER eating. This problem would need to be evaluated by a general surgeon.
