Fetal death--what happens to the baby?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Breakdown of structu: The fetus within the intact fetal membranes is no longer nourished by the placenta( no heart pushing blood to & fro) so the structures begin to break down. They may pass as a miscarriage or need to be coaxed out by an induction or manual removal.Over time the tissue can attain a bag of soup consistency.Retained tissue can cause an infection that may kill mom ( as i saw once in training).
