We have our own chemicals - endorphins and enkephalins, that are opioids and we produce when we feel really good, or have been exercising or when we are in pain. When we take an opioid medication, we are activating those same receptors. If you take enough of them long enough, you are likely at higher risk of developing dependency and addiction.
