A member asked:

The last two days i have had a soar throat, congestion, cough, and chunky mucus. should i see a doctor or treat it myself?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Choice: Most sore throats are caused by viruses, but some are caused by strep. Thick mucus drainage probably is irritating the throat and precipitating cough. Our bodies will effectively deal with simple infections, although if bacterial, an antibiotic will get resolution more efficiently. Strep throat infections may cause rheumatic and scarlet fever both of which can result in heart/kidney damage.
