Thumb sucker: Your child's thumb is serving as his built in security blanket. He is using it to calm his fears and frustrations. Talk to him and explainto him that thumb sucking is not normal behavior using examples of non thumb suckers in the family. Usually kids will drop the habit between 2 and4.

Malocclusion: Big problem w digit sucking habit is not what it does to the fingers (transient), but the permanent deformation that it can do to the mouth. First, your son's a year old...He should be scheduled for his 1st 5 dental examination now. Second, digit habits, if discontinued by age 4, rarely cause permanent deformation, so you have some time. See a dentist. Discuss concerns with him/her.
