My inner ear hurts - how do i tell if i have an ear infection?

Probably middle ear : The inner ear (near the brain) is not likely the source of pain. It's probably external or middle ear. Infection of middle ear would always cause a significant drop in hearing with it. External infection would cause swelling of canal with pain and possible drainage.
