Only you know best: Sickle cell (ss) disease is going to be something you and your family will be dealing with for a very long time. Only you can judge when your child is ready to understand about his disease. 2 books that might help are "sickle a cell disease: a mother's perspective" (lipscomb) and "taking my medicine" (egypt harvey).
