That's normal: All normal girls and normal women have negative home pregnancy test results during the majority of their lifetimes. It's only when a woman becomes pregnant that the test result turns positive (but returns to negative after a baby is born). Thus, the normal baseline result is negative.

HPT: Have you been sexually active? Have you missed your period? Even if conception occurred, if a woman tested too early, the test may not yet reflect it. However, not all women who miss their periods are pregnant- there are other causes.

See below: Conception occurs within day or so of the sex. It takes about 3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG for a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully.
