Why do things start to "move like a wave/distort" when you stare at them too long? or the same thing when something has an interesting pattern?

Visual fixation.: When you stare at a non-moving object your gaze is not absolutely fixed. Normal small fluctuations in eye movements occur and create the illusion that the object is moving. For complex, interesting ; especially repetitive patterns your brain has difficulty "deciding" just where to look and again, small involuntary eye movements, somewhat like drifting, create illusions of movement or distortion.
