How common is it for someone to suddenly not be able to breathe? what would cause that? my friend couldnt breathe out of nowhere?!

Not common: Unless there is a drug somewhere in this picture, it is not possible to spontaneously cease breathing. Your body will take over and restart the breathing no matter how hard you try not to.
