Not uncommon: About 1/2 of all pregnancies have some spotting in the first trimester. Of those, 1/2 go on and have perfectly normal babies and we never know why they had the spotting. Half will end up having a miscarriage. This is commonly due to abnormalities with the baby.

Observe: Although this can be a normal variant of very early pregnancy, the cramping should subside within 1-2 weeks. If not, see your gyn for a pelvic exam and ultrasound of your uterus.
