Slowly spreading: Tinea pedis ( athlete's foot) is usually a localized infection to the feet and can spread to the toenails. Many excellent creams are available for treatment and unless you immune system is compromised this should respond well to medical therapy: either cream alone or tablets with cream, depending on the severity of the infection.

Superficially Yes!: Contaminated hands are generally the culprit. If you are caring for fungus on the foot using a topical powder or topical cream--wash your hands afterwards because you can spread the fungus to other areas of the skin; dry the feet with a different towel than the groin.
