A member asked:

Is it selfish to conceive a child, knowing your child may inherit a psychiatric disorder?

No: Your child may not inherit the disease. Also, depending on your diagnosis, your child may not be at significant risk. I would discus your thoughts with your doctor.

Child: The genetic risks involved in transmission of a psychiatric illness varies, if you intend to get pregnant a genomic analysis and consultation would be good but that should not preclude you from having a child if you are able to love, nuture and provide safe care.

Personal decision: This is very much a personal ethical decision. Most children are at risk for something deriving from their genetic and family inheritance. Discussion with a psychiatrist, genetic counselor, or religious/spiritual leader may be helpful.
