If very overweight: Only if doing whole body scan or lumbar spine exam. The table usually has limit 300-350 pounds. If doing evaluation of extremity can do separate study with body not on table, then probably no issue.

A 36-year-old member asked:
What is a bone density scan test, and does it require radiation? Is it harmful?

Yes and no: Yes it requires radiation. The bone mineral density test (which is not a "bone scan" which is something entirely different) requires x-radiation. But no, it is not harmful in and of itself. The radiation dose is around 1/10 the dose from a chest radiograph. That said, radiation doses are cumulative, so each DXA adds a little to your total dose accumulation and risk.

What is the definition or description of: bone density scan?

Dr. Susan Wingo answered

Xray test for bones: A dexa(dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) measured the density of mineral/calcium in the bones, and is also known as bmd(bone mineral densitometry). It involves lying on an exam table while x-rays with 2 different wavelengths go through the hip and the spine region to measure the amount of calcium in the bones to determine if some has osteoporosis or a high risk for broken hip or other bones.
