What is the best fluid for a sickle cell patient to drink to prevent pain crisis or during a pain crisis?

Water: Water is probably the most important fluid to be giving during and after a sickle crisis, as dehydration may cause a sickle crisit to develop. It may be given by mouth or iv, but must be given slowly so as to not over load the heart and lungs.

Fluids & sickle cell: Plain water is perfectly adequate. Juices and sports drinks are great too. The most important thing is to avoid caffeine and alcohol, since these both make you urinate out more fluid than you take in so you get dehydrated.
