Intravenous therapy: Meningitis is an infection of the tissues surrounding the brain. Bacterial meningitis is treated with intravenous antibiotics and sometimes additional medications to decrease any swelling around the brain. There are non-bacterial causes of meningitis. However, intravenous therapy is initiated for all suspected cases until laboratory results and other tests can confirm the cause.

Hospitalization: I agree with dr. Lee and would add that most cases require hospitalization. If you think your child has meningitis, call your doctor immediately!

Depends on cause: If viral, usually self limited and rather benign, but if bacterial, antibiotics are crucial, if fungal, anti fungal drugs, if tuberculous, specific drugs for tbc. However, cancer can be culprit for carcinomatous meningitis, so key to get diagnosis asap.
