A member asked:

Help please, what are anabolic steroids?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

They are hormones: derived from cholesterol, that are related to testosterone, which is the naturally occurring one (as is andostenedione). They are either semisynthetic (chemically related to testosterone) or fully synthetic. They increase metabolism and muscle mass, which is their natural function in men, and cause sexual maturation. In excessive doses, they are very toxic, which is one reason they are banned.
