Hypertrophy : It has long been noted that ventricular enlargement does not necessarily lead to a decrease in cardiac performance. In fact, numerous studies dating back nearly 40 years have demonstrated that the mild to moderate left ventricular hypertrophy observed in highly trained athletes actually enhances cardiac performance via increases in stroke volume, contractility, and oxygen consumption.
