Lactose Intolerance: The disaccharide glucose and galactose is lactose, the main sugar in dairy products. Lactose intolerance is very common, particularly in adults. It occurs as a result of a deficiency in the lactase enzyme which breaks down lactose. Symptoms may include: gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea. Treatment consists of avoiding dairy, but many take oral lactase supplements just before eating dairy.
