A 16-year-old male asked:
why do people say you shouldn't get tested for herpes what is wrong with the test?

I do not know: If concerned for std's, there is no problem getting tested. Genital herpes can have many "negative" connotations associated with it and cause a lot of stress and anxiety, so maybe some people say don't get tested?

only a negative screen means something. You can have antibodies to the virus and never have an outbreak

What can be mistaken for herpes?

Other single rashes: Herpes blisters don't look like any other rash when they are at a single location. The reddish spot that comes before the blisters may look like an early pimple trying to form. The scab that comes after the blisters may look like an old pimple trying to heal. If unsure of the diagnosis, one can just do a blood test to look for herpes antibodies.

Cure for herpes?

Dr. Booth Wainscoat answered

Not yet: Herpes is one of the most common & frequent infections. Once infected, the virus travels to sensory nerves and remains there lifelong. There is no treatment to eliminate the virus permanently. Reactivation or 'outbreaks' of herpes can be managed effectively with anti-virals. Frequent outbreaks can be prevented with daily anti-virals taken for a year or longer with close supervision from a doctor.

Herpes: No cure for herpes. Treat each episode as needed. May take daily medication if: 1) you have more than 10 outbreaks a year, 2) your partner (s) is (are) herpes negative. You can pass/shed herpes even when you don't have outbreak. Incubation period is 2-26 days.

Has anyone tried quickclear for herpes?

Dr. Denise Elser answered

Not yet: Quickclear is an herbal remedy of several ingredients. Once someone has herpes they have the virus forever. Some have rare recurrences and some have frequent outbreaks. Antivirals such as Acyclovir can be taken daily to help prevent recurrences or taken in multiple doses at onset of outbreak to shorten duration.
