The Sun: The major benefit of the sun is helping the body to convert inactive vitamin d to active vitamin d, but skin damage and eventual skin cancers must be considered -- for prolonged exposure spf 30 sun tan lotion is recommended.

Benefit vs. risk.: Exposure to the sun would generally be more harmful than healthful for most people, and this especially holds true for seniors. The amount of sun exposure necessary for the vitamin D benefit, would reduce the integrity of your skin and could cause anything from dehydration to skin cancer. Best to protect yourself from the sun. You can always supplement vitamin D.
