Hard to say: The mastoid processes is behind the ear. If you happen to have an infection in the mastoid process pain could be caused by that. If you are talking about the muscles in your neck there could be something else going on. See your dr.

Arthritis?: The location of the pain behind the ear and upper neck is where several muscles attach to the mastoid process, the bone behind the ear. This pain is not related to the ear but most likely is myositis (muscle pain) or arthritis, or tendinitis. Heat, muscle relaxants may help. If not see a specialist in the field of arthritis.
