UTI or not : The symptom of pain when passing urine can be caused by infection in the urethra (the tube between the bladder and the outside), called urethritis. They can also be caused by irritation at the surface. There can be irritation in the bladder, urethra or externally that are not infection. Much less common is a culture that doesn't grow anything even though it is there.
