Epigenetics: While genetics is about information stored in genes, epigenetics is about how the genetic information gets expressed. I'm not sure what your mother meant by "historical trauma", epigenetics explains why two genetically identical persons, or cells, proceed to become different from each other. Many external stressors or toxins can affect genetic expression, affecting the way we are today.

Break the cycle: Of abuse, unforgiveness, pain, etc. As best you can by not looking for hardship to be inherited through your genes. Epigenetics is the process of growing from earlier stages of life to later ones, e.g., childhood, adolescence, early adult, etc. Another def. Of epigenetics has to do with our genes and what turns them on and off. Biology clearly also plays a role but choose life.
